Tekapo New Zealand
Situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo is the Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935 , the project driven by local runholders. As well as satisfying their spiritual needs, they saw it as an opportunity to commemorate their ancestors who braved the rigours of this harsh alpine environment to establish the runs.
The church at Lake Tekapo was designed by Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, based on sketches by a local artist and runholder, Esther Hope. A feature is its pure simplicity and that the stones are all natural condition; a tribute to the masons skill. The church is arguably one of the most photographed in New Zealand, and features an altar window that frames stunning views of the lake and mountains.
